TORONTO – A large Canadian study is challenging conventional wisdom that says a low-fat diet is optimal for cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of premature death. The McMaster University study of more than 135,000 people in 18 countries found that eating a moderate amount of all types of fat is linked to a reduced risk of early mortality compared to the much-touted low-fat diet — while consuming a high-carbohydrate diet is associated with an increased risk of dying early.“Contrary to popular belief, increased consumption of dietary fats is associated with a lower risk of death,” said lead author Mahshid Dehghan, a nutrition epidemiologist at the Hamilton university’s Population Health and Research Institute.“Those with a high-fat intake, about 30 per cent of energy intake, had a 23 per cent lower risk of mortality and an 18 per cent lower risk of stroke, compared to the low-intake group, which had 11 per cent energy from fat,” Dehghan said from Barcelona, where she presented the findings Tuesday to the European Society of Cardiology Congress.“The association with lower mortality was also seen with all major types of fat, by which I mean saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids.”Saturated fat is found in meat and dairy products, while monounsaturated fat is contained in nuts, avocados, and vegetable and olive oils. Polyunsaturated fat is found in walnuts, sunflower and flax seeds, fish, corn, soybean and safflower oils.Current global guidelines recommend that 50 to 65 per cent of daily calories come from carbohydrates, and less than 10 per cent from saturated fats. But Dehghan said that advice is mostly based on evidence from studies in North America and Europe.Cardiovascular disease is a global epidemic, with 80 per cent of the burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. Diet is a key modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, experts say.Dehghan said the healthiest diet would be made up of 50 to 55 per cent carbohydrates and 35 per cent total fat, including both saturated and unsaturated types.“We found no evidence that below 10 per cent of energy from saturated fat is beneficial — and going below seven per cent is even harmful,” she said, adding that a diet containing 10 to 13 per cent of energy from saturated fat was found to be beneficial.A diet that provides more than 60 per cent of energy from carbohydrates — one common among populations in China and South Asia — was associated with a 28 per cent higher risk of premature death, researchers found.“The message of our study is moderation as opposed to very low or very high intake in consumption of both fats and carbohydrates.”“We’re not advocating an extreme diet,” agreed co-author Andrew Mente. “We’re not saying that people should go on a low-carb, very high-fat diet because we didn’t find any benefit with a very low-carb diet either.“There’s a sweet spot for carbohydrates, which is about 55 per cent of energy intake.”The PURE (Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology) study was published Tuesday in The Lancet. In a linked commentary in the journal, Drs. Christopher Ramsden and Anthony Domenichiello of the U.S. National Institute on Aging called the research “an impressive undertaking that will contribute to public health for years to come.”“The relationships between diet, cardiovascular disease and death are topics of major public health importance…. Initial PURE findings challenge conventional diet-disease tenets that are largely based on observational associations in European and North American populations, adding to the uncertainty about what constitutes a healthy diet. This uncertainty is likely to prevail until well-designed randomized controlled trials are done.”Mente, also a nutrition epidemiologist at the Population Health and Research Institute, was lead author of a second analysis from the PURE study presented Tuesday at the cardiology meeting. That paper — one of three from PURE published in The Lancet — found that eating three to four servings of fruit, vegetables and legumes per day reduces the risk of premature death.“And consuming higher amounts, pretty much you have the same level of risk,” Mente said from Barcelona. “There’s no added benefit with consuming more than four servings.“This is important because existing guidelines recommend that people consume at least five servings per day, which is less affordable in the poorer countries because fruits and vegetables — particularly fruits — are more expensive as a proportion of people’s incomes.”Lower-income Canadians may also be unable to afford the five to 10 daily servings of fruits and vegetables recommended in the country’s Food Guide.“So what our study shows is you can achieve maximum benefit through fruits and vegetables and legumes, and it’s also affordable at the same time.”Mente said the study also showed raw vegetables appear to confer greater health benefits than those that are cooked because of a loss of nutrients from being exposed to heat. With the federal government in the process of revamping Canada’s Food Guide, the research could be a timely addition to consultations on what Canadians should be eating, Mente suggested.“We would hope that independent thinkers perhaps reconsider the guidelines and look at our data, and perhaps rather than putting limits on total fat and saturated fat, perhaps we should be putting limits on the amount of carbohydrates that people consume.”– Follow @SherylUbelacker on Twitter.
REGINA – A report from the Canadian Crop Hail Association says a reduction in potentially damaging storm activity on much of the Prairies this past summer led to one of the lightest hail-claim seasons in eight years. The 2017 report from the Regina-based association shows there were just over 8,600 claims in Western Canada that generated $96 million in insurance payouts. The report says there was a decrease in storm frequency from the five-year average, while damage claim frequency was down about 30 per cent for the same period of time.Manitoba farmers suffered the most losses, followed by Alberta and Saskatchewan. The association says the lack of moisture was widespread this year with record to near-record dry conditions throughout much of Saskatchewan and parts of Alberta. The organization also says farmers continue to insure their crops for hail damage at near record levels. The report said there was more timely precipitation in Manitoba where producers enjoyed good yield and quality, despite dry conditions. The province’s loss ratio of 45.9 per cent was well below 2016’s record loss ratio of 158.9 per cent.Alberta followed at 33.7 per cent, compared to 83.6 per cent in 2016. Saskatchewan reported a 30-per-cent loss ratio compared to 73 per cent in 2016.The report said producer premiums totalled just over $286 million for an industry loss ratio of 33.8 per cent.A dry spring combined with 2016 unharvested acres and some continued industry rate declines resulted in a five-per-cent decrease in producer-paid premiums this year. The Canadian Crop Hail Association is a member-driven organization that represents the interests of the Canadian crop hail managing general agencies and insurance companies. It’s been serving the crop insurance industry since 1915.Association member companies write crop-hail insurance products totalling more than $250 million in premiums, and liability totalling about $6 billion.

The big event in Los Angeles has come and gone, and the world now knows that Microsoft is indeed throwing its hat into the ring with the Surface tablet. Geek.com has already provided a look at what you can expect from both the Surface for Windows RT and Surface Pro (x86) models… and now it’s time for some early comparisons. How does the entry-level Surface stack up against the competition? Let’s look at it side-by-side-by-side with the new iPad and Amazon’s Kindle Fire:There are a few key unknowns, of course. Microsoft has yet to announce specifics about the processor (such as the number of cores and clock speed) and the resolution of the display, and we also don’t know how much the Surface tablets will cost. Those who got to spend a little hands-on time with the devices said they found the display to be “gorgeous” and pegged it at 1366×768 — which at 10.4 inches equates to a PPI of about 150. The new iPad pushes 264 PPI, but if the Surface display looks as great as members of the press said it does, the general public probably won’t consider this difference a shortcoming. On the pricing front, all we know is that Microsoft said that the Surface would be comparable to other ARM tablets (or Ultrabooks, in the case of the Pro model). It’s very likely, then, that the Surface for Windows RT will sell at or below the price of the iPad.Another unknown is just how many Windows RT apps will be available in the Windows Store come launch day. We know for sure that certain big-name apps and games will be on offer — like Evernote, Netflix, Kobo, and Cut The Rope. The number won’t come anywhere near the App Store’s total inventory, and it’s likely that Amazon will have more to offer, too. But if the average user can find the key apps they expect to find, this shortfall won’t matter much either. While the Microsoft Surface event lived up to the hype and answered a number of questions, there’s still a long way to go before we’ll know exactly how Microsoft’s device measures up. October’s not far off, however, so you won’t have to wait too long to find out.

There’s no legal bar to its use in the parliamentary elections. The problems of ballot voting will be eliminated with its use. How many EVMs will be used in the election will be finalised within the next two days,” he told the inaugural ceremony of a training programme at ETI Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon area. The CEC’s remarks came a day after Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Front warned that their alliance will file a case against the government and the EC if they try to use EVM in the upcoming national election without amending the Constitution.Nurul Huda said the people of those areas where EVM will be used must be trained about its use a few days ago and then there will be no problem.Inviting the political parties that are opposing the EVM use to test it, he said, “Various parties are opposing the EVM use. Let them test the technical issues of EVM by their people and then their doubts will be removed.”Replying to a query about the recovery of a BNP leader’s body, Huda said will ask the law enforcement agencies to bring those under law who were involved in the incident. He urged the trainers to train the election officials properly to hold a fair election.”They need to know about neutrality, technical skills, law, rules and regulations. Though you people know it the assistant presiding officers may not know. Train them properly, “he said.
A 14-year-old schoolboy who volunteered to help out at an archaeological dig in Glasgow found one of a set of gravestones from the Middle Ages that have been lost to historians. Mark McGettigan’s discovery at Govan Old Parish Church led to two more sculpted gravestones being found. They are known as the Govan Stones, dating to the 10th and 11th centuries. The Govan Stones, part of a wider collection of carved gravestones, were known to have existed, but historians and archaeologists lost track of their whereabouts when a nearby shipyard was demolished more than four decades ago.Govan Old Parish Church. McGettigan, a student at Lourdes Secondary School, was helping out with an archaeological survey of the area when he made the discovery. The budding archaeologist said he was “ecstatic” after his find was confirmed as being the missing Govan Stones, said The Scotsman. He told the BBC: “I was just prodding the ground to see if there was anything there and suddenly it made a noise and I realized I had hit something. Myself and two of the archaeologists worked out the area of the object and started to dig it out and clean it. I wasn’t too sure at the start what it was. John F. Kennedy was en route to give a speech at the Dallas Trade Mart when he was assassinated while riding in his motorcade in Dealy Plaza on November 22, 1963. Even though Kennedy never a delivered the address, the text of the speech was preserved and almost 55 years later The Times of London, along with British audio tech company CereProc, have used modern technology to produce a remarkable recreation of the ‘lost’ speech in the voice of the 35th President. In order to re-create the 2,950 word speech, researchers analyzed 831 Kennedy speeches and amassed 116,777 sound units from audio clips to allow JFK deliver the speech in his New England accent, and his trademark cadence. The speech focused on American leadership during the cold war and the dangers of the public being guided by misinformation especially rings true in today’s “fake news” era:“This link between leadership and learning is not only essential at the community level. It is even more indispensable in world affairs. Ignorance and misinformation can handicap the progress of a city or a company, but they can, if allowed to prevail in foreign policy, handicap this country’s security. In a world of complex and continuing problems, in a world full of frustrations and irritations, America’s leadership must be guided by the lights of learning and reason or else those who confuse rhetoric with reality and the plausible with the possible will gain the popular ascendancy with their seemingly swift and simple solutions to every world problem.”Here are several clips from the speech. Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global February 16, 2018 Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Market leaders such as Amazon, eBay and Netflix are using artificial intelligence (AI) to take their customer experience to a whole new level. Meanwhile, many small-business owners still believe their web sites’ live chat will be enough to serve potential buyers. They’re missing the mark.AI has changed online commerce by enabling brands to make sense of their data and put it to good use with smarter algorithms. In this age of conversational commerce, artificial intelligence is critical to providing a personalized experience. Businesses without an AI strategy are almost certain to perish. According to Forrester, insights-driven businesses will “steal” $1.2 trillion per year from their “less-informed peers.”Related: Why Small Business Should Be Paying Attention to Artificial IntelligenceUntil a few months back, only bigger companies could afford the sizable investments required to implement AI. That’s no longer the case. AI is becoming more accessible to businesses of all sizes. In the next few years, AI will continue to expand its reach throughout organizations. Early adopters already are reaping the benefits. If you’re not one of them, now is the time to start. Here are four reasons you (and every small-business owner) should incorporate AI-enabled technology in your sales and customer-service strategies.1. Leave competitors behind.Virtual assistants, smart mirrors, visual search, chatbots — no matter the size of your business, AI is the future. Some experts predict that by 2020, 85 percent of customer interactions will be handled without a human. It won’t happen overnight, though, even if at times the technology seems to advance that quickly. A recent Forrester survey revealed 58 percent of businesses have considered AI technologies, but 12 percent actually put AI into practice. In that gap lies a huge untapped opportunity. Businesses that adopt AI technologies wil vault ahead of their competitors. The takeaway: AI-driven personalization is the future. Use AI or die. It’s that simple.Related: 5 Ways Small-Business Owners Can Benefit from Artificial Intelligence Today2. Save money.AI can help small businesses cut their costs in the long run. But most company leaders underestimate the importance of implementing AI at an early stage. Yes, the initial cost of hardware and infrastructure is expensive. Don’t let that keep you from making the leap.AI enables your team to engage your customer base in a highly personalized way. This increases conversions and retention. If you’re like most small retailers, your limited budget means you can afford discount offers for only a few potential customers. Unfortunately, it might be difficult to know how much to discount your product or who should get that enticing offer. AI can help you give the right discount to the right customer — thus achieving a better return on investment.AI can assist you on virtually any marketing channel, including push notifications, email marketing and SMS marketing. AI can determine the best time to send messages to every customer, so you’ll increase your chances for engagement and a higher conversion rate. AI also can help you identify the right marketing channels for every recipient. This information allows you to target customers with the right message at the right time. Your marketing spend just got smarter. The takeaway: AI won’t just help you save money — it’s a must to satisfy your customers’ increasingly sophisticated expectations.3. Re-create the offline shopping experience, online.Outstanding service is the key to success for small businesses, and many companies make an extra effort to delight their customers. Physical retailers dish out the special treatment. They go beyond the first-name basis, seeking to tailor their assistance around the remembered preferences of loyal customers. Small businesses in the online world were missing the personal touch — until AI came along.Mainstream AI makes the tools required to personalize an online shopping more accessible and affordable. If you don’t implement AI, you’ll struggle to uncover customer data, much less identify patterns to effectively segment your customers based on purchasing behaviors. AI makes it easier to analyze their past actions so you can predict their future behavior. The takeaway: Online shopping is continually evolving, and so are customer expectations. AI is one of the few accessible ways to fulfill those expectations. Related: 10 Artificial Intelligence Trends to Watch in 20184. Save time.Marketing plays a vital role in the success of every business. That being said, you often need to hire more people and dedicate hours of manpower to get good results from it. Small businesses, unfortunately, don’t often have resources needed to ramp up marketing efforts. AI can empower small retailers by automating tasks, accessing rich insights and reaching out to the right customer with the right message at the right time.Key takeaway: AI not only can save you time and money, it can make your marketing more effective and targeted. 5 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. The chairman of the panel that investigated the collapse of the co-operative bank has resigned from two government bodies, citing his revulsion at the government’s scorn of the probe’s findings.Giorgos Aresti quit his position from a council dealing with the disciplinary control of financial auditors, informing the government that he was leaving due to “prior commitments.” He also recently resigned from an agency tasked with sanctioning companies (banning them from bidding for public contracts) found to have engaged in corrupt practices. However, Aresti has since confirmed to local media that the real reason is the anger he feels over the government’s “disparaging” comments over the findings of the co-op probe, released earlier this month.Speaking to the state broadcaster on Tuesday, the former supreme court judge said he felt “insulted” by the remarks of President Nicos Anastasiades and Finance Minister Harris Georgiades subsequent to the probe’s release. He spoke of an effort by the government to “deconstruct” the work of the committee of inquiry, and asked what is the purpose of holding an inquiry when the government does not respect the findings or casts aspersions on the panel members themselves.Aresti was airing his grievances, apparently triggered by a dismissive remark made a day earlier by the government spokesman. When asked about Aresti’s resignation from the two government bodies, the spokesman merely said that “each person is free to make their own choices.”“The government had made its choice, Aresti is resigning, a replacement will have to be found,” he said on Tuesday. In comments to daily Phileleftheros, Aresti explained: “I do have other prior commitments, but this alone did not determine my decision. What has transpired – the doubting of not only the committee of inquiry but also of me personally – left me no choice but to resign [from the two government bodies]. For me, it was a matter of dignity.”President Anastasiades and his government have disputed the findings of the committee, which held the finance minister mainly responsible for the co-op bank’s collapse under the weight of some €7bn in bad debts and its sale to Hellenic Bank.Anastasiades said he did not feel compelled to accept the findings “just because three people… who did not substantiate what they said, decided so.”The president had added: “I hear criticism that the president is to blame because he hasn’t sacked the minister. And I ask: would the non-performing loans have been reduced if I dismissed him? Was the minister expected to go around collecting the NPLs?”Anastasiades said no one was beyond criticism, including court decisions. He added that he had the right to disagree with a report compiled by a “judge and two former bankers.”Other political parties were quick to jump on the resignations to launch digs at the government for its stance on the report’s findings.“There was an effort to belittle both the three-member body of the council and its findings,” general secretary of main opposition party Akel Andros Kyprianou said, adding that Aresti’s resignation was an act of “dignity”.The resignation of Aresti “constitutes a slap” to the government, head of the Green party Giorgos Perdikis said.Diko said that rather than seeing the resignation of those that the report showed to be responsible for the collapse of the Co-op bank, the person who identified the responsible persons is being forced to resign. The co-op committee of inquiry was appointed by the attorney-general in June 2018. Chaired by Aresti, its two other members were economist Giorgos Charalambous, a former Bank of Cyprus executive, and Giorgos Georgiou, a former executive at Alpha Bank and former chairman of the bank association. You May LikeCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityMake earthquake insurance a family priorityCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityUndoLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoPopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoCypriot tycoon launches ‘Bank of Cannabis’UndoArgaka mukhtar stops conservationists againUndoby Taboolaby Taboola
