Corey Wagner, left, of Rumson and Patrick Finan of Fair Haven have established joinagame.com to match area residents looking for pickup games to games being played at local fields and courts.By John BurtonWebsite launched to help match players with gamesSometimes it’s tough to find people who want to shoot some hoops, play a little softball or toss around the football.“For adults, once you leave your college group or your high school group of friends, your network, you have a tough time finding people to fill out a game, especially like a soccer game or a baseball game, even a basketball game,” said Corey Wagner, who thinks he has a solution.Wagner, a 26-year-old Rumson resident, and his friend, Patrick Finan, 23, of Fair Haven, see the solution to finding others looking to play sports in a new social-media website they have developed.“We tossed the idea around and a lot of our acquaintances seemed to have the same feeling, you know, it’s a good idea to create a website to connect everybody,” Wagner said.“You build it, they’ll come, right?” Finan said.Wagner and Finan launched their website, joinagame.com, this week. The two are acknowledged sports enthusiasts, who are ready to play anytime, anywhere, jumping at a chance to join a volleyball or basketball game. But, “Even with my friends, I think we just accepted there is nothing out there. Nobody is willing to put the work in to arrange it,” Finan said, who concedes that calling others to get a game together takes a lot of work.“There’s a 101 social networks out there but nothing really facilitates sports playing,” Wagner said.“We wanted to simplify that process with just a click of a button, instead of calling everyone,” Finan said. What joinagame.com does is list eight local towns – Atlantic Highlands, Fair Haven, Rumson, Little Silver, Red Bank, Oceanport Sea Bright and Shrewsbury – and the towns’ fields and parks. The site allows individuals to sign up for accounts, establish their profiles with pictures if they wish, as with Facebook or other social media sites, and list what sports in which they have an interest. There is a “find games” feature where members can click their way through, “and, if something interests you, you click ‘join,’ ” Wagner said, and get the time and location. The site will have maps to show participants where the fields, courts or parks are located and lists the others participating in the game.Participants also can start up their own games and specify how many are needed to play. Potential players have a choice of about nine different sports.“I know a lot of people who are like, ‘I’d like to play here and there but I’m not really willing to sign up for league,’” and this is the answer for those people, Wagner said. The two have contacted the various municipal recreation departments to find out what would be required. Some towns require fees, as much as $40, for organized leagues, but don’t charge for a pickup game and will take reservations for court or field time. That information would be available on joinagame.com.Most of the recreation directors “are really excited about it, actually” and thought it was a good idea, Wagner said.Finan and Wagner have decided to make the service available for no charge.“We feel a lot of people would be turned off by having to pay $5 a month or whatever,” Finan said. They hope that down the road, the site will attract enough attention that it will entice businesses to advertise with them.“If it works,” and they attract attention and participants, “we’ll go to the next town,” and expand, Wagner said.“It’s easy to replicate once it’s started,” he said.Additional information is available by logging on to joinagame.com.

Dear Editor,The controversial Appeal Court’s ruling against the No Confidence Motion (NCM) resolves around the meaning of the word “majority” as intended by Article (106). No one in the Appellate disagrees that the greater number in the National Assembly constitutes a majority. The median or the 50th percentile of a set of numbers, by statistical and mathematical reasoning, is half the sum of all numbers plus one, or equivalently 1/2 (n+1).In the case of the fifty (52) Members of Parliament of the Republic of Vanuatu, one half of 53 (26.5) and then rounded up yield 27 as the majority. In the case of Guyana with 65 sitting Members of Parliament, one half 66 (65+1) is 33, the number that constitutes the majority as in the case of the Republic of Vanuatu. However, in the Guyana case, the median was not applied. Instead, Chancellor Cummings-Edwards and Justice Gregory disaggregated the median formula into two overlapping stages to define the majority by taking one-half, rounded-up and then plus one to yield a majority of 34. This two-stage hybrid is mathematically and statistically flawed by international standards. Why? In the first stage, the number is rounded-up, and again the rounded value is added to one to overstate the majority by one. Therefore, based on the median principles in determining the 50th percentile, 33 is the majority of 32 in the 65-Member Parliament; and, reflects the true effect of the constitution.Chancellor Cummings-Edwards and Justice Gregory have been misguided in their ruling, but for Justice Persaud who correctly uphold the ruling earlier reached by Parliament and validated by the High Court.Yours sincerely,Dr Dev Rawana, PhDProfessor ofEconomics andStatistics
As relatives returned home from the post-mortem examination of a man who drowned in East Canje, they were greeted with the news that his father’s decomposed body was discovered in a house in another part of East Canje.Dead: Bhognarine IsbarranDead: Budhram IsbarranOn Monday, Bhognarine Isbarran, also called “Gaga”, 40, was fished out of a trench in the backlands of Cumberland, East Canje. The man had gone fishing.According to his mother, Niniwattie Persaud, called “Nado”, the former cane harvester left home to go fishing and never returned. A search party went in search of Bhognarine, who was an epileptic, and discovered his body partly submerged in a trench.Persaud explained that his face was in the water and the rest of his body out of the trench.Bhognarine, who had separated from his wife a few years ago, became ill and stopped working as a cane harvester. He did odd jobs in the village to earn an income. An autopsy conducted on the body on Wednesday confirmed that he drowned. After the results of the autopsy were given to family members, Persaud received news that her former husband was found dead in a house at Reliance Settlement. The partly decomposed body of the elder Isbarran, was discovered lying on the floor of his Lot 47 Second Street, Reliance Settlement home, partly nude. The 67-year-old was last seen on Monday. But, unlike Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., who had only two years of judicial opinions when he came up for confirmation in September, Alito has a 15-year track record as an appeals court judge, plus a long tenure in the Justice Department during the 1980s. The lengthy paper trail will constrain Alito in answering questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Unlike Roberts, who dazzled senators with textbook responses, Alito won’t be able to pacify critics by giving a professorial overview of the law: Each of his responses will be measured against his long record. If the senators do their homework, the public should emerge with a clearer picture of Alito’s views. And the record itself, which has been coming to the public’s attention in dribs and drabs through journalistic examination of cases and the release of documents by the National Archives, should provide fodder for a week’s worth of questions. There are, for instance, many times when Alito applied strict conservative readings of the Constitution in highly charged cases that other judges viewed differently. He voted to strike down a ban on the sale of machine guns because he felt Congress lacked the power to regulate such sales. He voted to allow a public high school to include a prayer in its graduation ceremony, on the grounds that students preferred it to a moment of silence. He said a police officer couldn’t be sued for strip-searching a 10-year-old girl if he reasonably believed he had a warrant to do so, even if he didn’t have one. Samuel A. Alito Jr.’s chances of being confirmed as a Supreme Court justice could turn on whether the public comes away from next week’s confirmation hearings believing he is a conservative judicial activist or merely a conservative judge. A conservative judge is a careful reader of legal precedents who is inherently cautious about advancing new interpretations. A conservative judicial activist seeks to change the court’s past interpretations to suit his agenda. If there’s one point of agreement to emerge from the two months of political vetting since Alito’s nomination, it’s that most of his supporters and most of his detractors believe that conservative judges are worthy of confirmation, but conservative activists (or any activists) are not. But there is no bright line between conservative judges and activists. Even cautious Supreme Court justices don’t hesitate to overturn cases that they believe have been wrongly decided; and even highly committed activists defer to precedent in some areas. And, in a case that later went to the Supreme Court, he declared that requiring married women to inform their husbands of their plans to have an abortion did not pose an “undue burden” on a woman’s rights. To critics, these decisions are the work of an activist who seeks to limit congressional power, allow a greater role for religion in public life, reduce constraints on law-enforcement officers, and make it harder for women to get abortions. To his supporters, the decisions show a conservative judge’s fidelity to the Constitution, assuring that activities within individual states can’t be regulated by Congress, as in the machine-gun case, but otherwise giving deference to legislatures and law-enforcement officials. Alito’s critics buttress their case by pointing to memos from his Justice Department career that, they say, go beyond analyzing cases to express enthusiasm for the conservative agenda. Most of the disputes about Alito turn on his motives – essentially, whether he seeks to impose a political agenda on the courts. Alito’s motives ought to be discernible by a panel of tough questioners fortified with a quarter-century of legal writings. Much will depend on how seriously the senators take their roles as questioners. Initial signs are good. Many Democrats have expressed deep concerns about Alito, but most have also promised to keep an open mind. The Judiciary Committee’s Republican chairman, Arlen Specter, has been supportive of Alito but also vowed to be a tough inquisitor. If the senators fulfill their responsibilities, next week’s hearings will be the most revealing in decades. Peter S. Canellos is Washington bureau chief of the Boston Globe. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set!

Kate Moss is the subject of four paintings by Stella Vine now on show at a London exhibit, including one based on a tabloid photo that allegedly shows her preparing a line of cocaine. A portrait titled “Must Be the Season of the Witch” is based on a photo of the 31-year-old supermodel that was published in a London tabloid in September. Vine said Friday she usually bases her work on press photos. Moss entered The Meadows rehab clinic outside Phoenix after the photo was published. She left the clinic in late October and has resumed her modeling career. Two of Vine’s other paintings of Moss are also portraits. One shows a wide-eyed Moss holding a champagne glass. Another, titled “Holy Water Cannot Help You Now,” shows her holding a cigarette in her hand as paint drips from her face.
Matt Olson hadn’t seen Milwaukee power reliever Josh Hader since low-A ball. That lefty-on-lefty matchup typically went Hader’s way.“I might have one hit off the guy,” Olson said. “He’s had my number for multiple years.”Olson wasn’t alone. Hader has most big leaguers’ number, really. In three seasons playing under The Show’s spotlight, the two-time All-Star has a cumulative 2.25 ERA and had allowed all of 22 home runs.In the 10th inning Tuesday night, game tied, Olson got that second hit. …
Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… No Confusing LingoThe difference between Sparkbuy and so many other shopping comparison sites is how it phrases your gadget requirements. Instead of saying “4 GB of RAM or higher” or “500 GB hard drive,” for example, the filters on Sparkbuy are written using the language that normal (i.e. non-geeks) understand – like “fast” and “big hard drive.”Other options include things like “lightweight” and “long battery” for describing the computer’s features, and choices like “Photoshop” or “MS Office,” for describing the types of software programs the computer can support. For TVs, you can toggle things like “3D” or “Wall Mount” on or off, and then use sliders for more technical items like “Contrast Ratio” or “Brightness.”The resulting lists can then be sorted by best match or price (either low to high or vice versa). Individual items have easy-to-read ratings, spec lists and links to sites where the product can be found. Although consumers already have a number of gadget-shopping services at their disposal, including everything from Google Product Search to Amazon, Sparkbuy is innovating through its easy-to-use website design and its manuallymcurated collection of data. The result is a gadget-shopping site that even the most woefully un-tech-savvy consumer could use, while still appealing to gadget geeks looking for an easier comparison shopping tool.Sparkbuy was created by Dan Shapiro, who previously founded Ontela, a mobile imaging company that merged with Photobucket in 2009. The company has also raised a $1 million venture and angel round led by Benaroya Ventures and Geoff Entress.Shapiro said the idea came to him after he got fed up shopping for laptops online. “After hours of reading reviews and sorting through websites, I felt like I was stuck in a cruel game of Confusopoly. It wasn’t until I happened to buy an airplane ticket from a travel search site that the ‘aha’ moment hit. Why couldn’t I shop this way for my computer?”With Sparkbuy, the company has created a simple interface to process the large amount of data available online for consumer electronics. Initially, the site is launching with a data set of half a million points from its team of researchers, who pulled the info from everything from manufacturer spec sheets to online photos. The company pulls its data from multiple sources to prevent bias, we’re told.Currently, Sparkbuy offers data for over 2,000 laptops and it has just started adding TVs to its database. Monitors will be next, followed by smartphones in the near future. Sparkbuy had been in a closed beta since Dec. 1 with a limited number of testers. Today, it launches into open beta to the general public. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market
