I am updating my budget to include an additional $1.6 billion so that we can return to Space in a BIG WAY!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 13, 2019 President Donald Trump also tweeted about the proposed increase. null NASA’s making new travel plans to return to the moon. Jackal Pan / Getty Images NASA’s mission to put people back on the moon now has a name: Artemis. That’s not a random choice: In Greek mythology, the goddess Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo, after whom the original moon landing missions were named. The space agency’s updated budget request asks for $1.6 billion to help get that mission to the moon off the ground, The New York Times reported Monday. NASA confirmed the news on Twitter. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted that the Artemis mission would be the first time a woman walks on the moon, something Vice President Mike Pence had alluded to in March. That same month, NASA scrapped plans for the first all-female spacewalk because of a spacesuit sizing issue. The news comes just over a month before the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. Last August, Pence spoke at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and laid out plans for humans to develop a permanent moon base and travel to Mars.NASA didn’t immediately respond to a request for additional comment. first_imgOn August 28, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Below is the front page story the AFRO ran about the event. While the fight for civil rights continues today, many of the same groups opposing civil rights back then, such as Nazis, are still trying to deny African American those rights. Next week the AFRO will run historic images from the march.By Arthur HatfieldWASHINGTONAugust 31, 1963200,000 Voices Will Be Heard!More than 200,000 civil rights crusaders can be credited with creating a turning point in American history. As participants in the great March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, they have given birth to a new national conscience which is demanding civil rights and equal employment for all Americans without delay. There is no way of telling now how much the Aug. 28 march will stimulate the actions of Congress in considering President Kennedy’s civil rights program.(AFRO file photo)There is no question, however, that the imprint left by multitudes of civil rights marchers will linger on many a legislators mind. The march was the largest group petition for rights ever made in America. Most civil rights crusaders believe that the demonstration will contribute greatly to keeping the civil rights issues before the Congress and the American public until effective legislation is passed.High on the list of march objectives, of course, is the matter of awakening reactionary Republicans and Southern Democrats to the point of acting favorably on civil rights.Congressmen in this group include some of the most important figures in Washington. They hold down top party positions and are chairman of influential legislative committees. As of now, the forecast for Congressional debate on the rights issue extends to the start of 1964.President Kennedy has stated that he knows of no reason why the legislation should not be passed in 1963.This is one goal of the march, to dramatize the need for enactment of national civil rights and fair employment laws—without compromise or filibuster—now.Advanced planning for the massive demonstration stressed the importance of the marchers being orderly, even solemn in spirit.March leaders ruled out demonstrating at the Capitol and the White House. Instead, it was decided to hold a mammoth march from Washington Monument to Lincoln Memorial. The plan included a call on the White House by selected rights leaders and a report of the meeting with the President and Congressional leaders made at the Lincoln Memorial Rally. All of the Senators and Representatives were invited to listen to the 10 leaders of the march, speaking for three minutes each on the demands for equality in jobs and civil rights.March headquarters invited participation by civil rights fighters who have faced tear gas, water hoses, electric jolts, police dogs and arrests.Seats of honor were assigned for Mrs. Medgar Evers, wife of the Mississippi leader who was killed from ambush; Mrs. Gloria Richardson, leader of the Cambridge, Md. drive; Mrs. Daisy Bates of Little Rock, and Rosa Parks, a leader in the Montgomery, Ala. bus boycott in 1955.“We do not expect any trouble,” District Police Chief Robert V. Murray said many times. The only angry voice was that of George Lincoln Rockwell, head of the American Nazi Party, who toured Virginia for volunteers for his “countermarch” on the day of the demonstration.District and march officials were prepared for any eventuality. City and National Park Service police were reinforced by about 2,000 marchers under the direction of William H. Johnson, a New York City patrolman who volunteered his vacation time for the job.In all, 10,000 men were picked to direct the mass influx of buses and automobiles.last_img read more

first_imgWe’ve seen tons of Kinect hacks over the last couple of months, but something tells me this is the one that millions of slavering MMORPG players were waiting for: a Kinect hack that lets you control your character in Blizzard‘s World of Warcraft using gestures alone. The hack was put together by a team at the University of South California’s Institute for Creative Technologies based upon a tool kit they created called the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit, which allows them to leverage the Kinect’s motion-sensing abilities and translate it on the fly into any code they desire. The end result is a piece of software that translates the Kinect’s data into an articulated virtual skeleton, the movements of which can be mapped onto keyboard controls.Eventually, FAAST is meant to help drive rehabilitative “games” meant to restore motor function, but right now, they’re showing it off as a front-end to World of Warcraft. Experimental? For sure: as neat as this is, it doesn’t look like either an easy or particularly pleasant way to control your Alliance gnome. Imagine what World of Warcraft would be like, though, if Blizzard more deeply integrated Kinect-like technology into their MMO. We’d have working VR.Read more at Gizmodolast_img read more

first_img Citation: Spaceplane that takes off from airport runway could be ready in 10 years (2010, September 21) retrieved 18 August 2019 from This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. The spaceplane, called Skylon, is 82 meters long and has a 25-meter wingspan. Like an airplane, the spaceplane takes off and lands horizontally from a typical airport runway. Traveling at speeds of up to Mach 25, the vehicle could reach altitudes of 460 km (285 miles). It could carry payloads of up to 12 tonnes (twice that of a normal rocket), as well as about 30 passengers.Skylon has no external rockets, but is propelled by two hybrid air-breathing/rocket engines that burn liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. In the first phase, the vehicle combines air from the atmosphere with on-board liquid hydrogen to reach speeds of Mach 5.5. In the second phase, on-board liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propel the vehicle to orbital velocities of Mach 25. Before take-off, the spaceplane weighs 275 tonnes, but only 55 tonnes when landing. The weight difference is due to the on-board fuel: at take-off, the vehicle carries about 66 tonnes of liquid hydrogen and 150 tonnes of liquid oxygen. Before re-entering the atmosphere, any unused liquid hydrogen is evaporated and vented overboard, since re-entry is easier for lighter vehicles. It will cost an estimated $12 billion to develop the spaceplane (about the same amount that it costs to develop an Airbus jet). It would cost an additional $10 million per launch, compared to the approximately $150 million cost of a rocket launch. The company predicts that a trip to orbit for two weeks would cost tourists about $500,000 per seat. Skylon takes off and lands on a normal runway, reducing the launch cost. Image credit: Reaction Engines. Skylon can reach speeds of up to Mach 25 and altitudes of up to 460 km (285 miles). The company predicts that there is a market for up to 70 reusable Skylon spaceplanes worldwide. “You can imagine a situation when some of our industrially important but polluting processes are done in space and the finished products are brought back down to Earth,” said Richard Varvill, technical director and one of the founders of Reaction Engines. More information: The Engineer and Daily Mail Explore further ( — An unpiloted, air-breathing spaceplane that takes off from an airport runway, carries up to 30 passengers, and costs less than one-tenth to launch into space compared to a conventional rocket could be ready to fly in 10 years, according to its developers, Reaction Engines of Oxfordshire, UK. Although the spaceplane is currently in the proof-of-concept phase, the country’s new UK Space Agency is hosting a workshop this week to discuss developing the spaceplane commercially. If successful, the spaceplane could be the first single-stage-to-orbit craft to reach orbit.last_img read more

Easy breezy and chic. That’s how James Ferreira’s collection can be described. It is urban, it is suave –  yet the ensembles can glam up any party. The collection emphasises how one can use kitsch and not overkill. He used light fabrics like cotton voiles, crepes and silk jerseys to create jumpsuits and gowns. He weaved in the Ganesha and floral motifs – making hand painting almost look like faded digital prints. The icing on the cake? The cute little jig by the designer to close the show. read more

first_imgFannie Mae Offers Appraisal Waiver for Eligible Loans Appraisals Fannie Mae 2016-12-12 Seth Welborn in Daily Dose, Featured, News, Secondary Market Sharecenter_img Certain eligible loans backed by Fannie Mae will no longer need appraisals after the GSE implemented a technology update over the weekend with the goal of creating more efficiency for lenders, according to an announcement from Fannie Mae.Effective Saturday, December 10, Fannie Mae implemented its property inspection waiver (PIW), offered through its Desktop Underwriter program, for certain refinance loans. The PIW offer, issued through Fannie Mae’s Collateral Underwriter (CU) on loans that are found to have a qualifying risk score, will give lenders more freedom from representations and warranties, according to Fannie Mae.“With the power of Collateral Underwriter, relief from representations and warranties for appraised property value on many loans now makes the process more efficient for everyone by reducing the need for follow-up with appraisers,” said Carlos Perez, SVP and chief credit officer for single-family at Fannie Mae. “And with the enhanced property inspection waiver, many refinance transactions will not require a new appraisal, potentially shortening the origination process and giving borrowers a significant cost savings.”According to Fannie Mae, the following transactions can be considered for a PIW offer: one-unit properties (including condominiums); principal residences, second homes, and investment property transactions; limited cash-out refi transactions up to a 90 percent LTV/CLTV for principal residences and second homes and up to 75 percent on investment properties; cash-out refis on up to a 70 percent LTV/CLTV for principal residences and up to 60 percent for second homes and investment properties; and loan casefiles that receive a recommendation of Approve/Eligible.Fannie Mae told MReport that as many as 10 percent of all Fannie Mae-backed loans or as many as 25 percent of  refis will be receiving a PIW.The new initiative to provide lenders with more freedom from representation and warranties is part of Fannie Mae’s Day 1 Certainty program launched in October with the goal of a faster, more efficient originations process to save lenders and borrowers time and money.“Ultimately, we want our customers to have the confidence to lend, so that more qualified borrowers have access to affordable mortgage credit,” Fannie Mae CEO Timothy J. Mayopoulos said in late October when Day 1 Certainty was launched. “We will continue to listen to our customers and partner with them to deliver innovative solutions that address the nation’s most important housing challenges.”Click here to view a fact sheet on Fannie Mae’s Enhanced Property Inspection Waiver. first_imgThe number of elderly people in Cyprus rose 4.6 per cent and the number of children under 15 dropped by 16 per cent over the past 17 years as the island’s fertility rate continues to remain under population replacement levels, a demographic report from the statistical service Cystat revealed on Friday. At the same time, it showed that life expectancy for both men and women in Cyprus dropped last year over 2016 figures to 80 years for men and 84.1 years for women, from 80.3 and 84.7 respectively in 2016. The majority in the 80+ group were women. The  report put the fertility rate at 1.32 last year, well below the replacement level of 2.1 even though the population grew overall by 1.1 per cent last year, as women wait even longer to have a child and migration grows.According to Cystat, the population in the government-controlled area stood at 864,200 at the end of 2017, compared with 854,800 at the end of 2016, recording an increase of 1.1%.“The proportion of children below 15 was 16.2 per cent while the proportion of persons aged 65 and over increased to 15.9 per cent in 2017, compared with 22.3 per cent and 11.3 per cent respectively in 2000,” Cystat said.“There was therefore a gradual increase in the proportion of old-aged persons and a decrease in the proportion of children, demonstrating the ageing process of the population.”In 2017 the number of births decreased to 9,229 from 9,455 the year before, giving a crude birth rate of 10.7 per 1,000 population. The total fertility rate for 2017 decreased to 1.32 from 1.37 in 2016. The total fertility rate has decreased gradually over the years, from its peak of 2.46 between 1982 and 1985.Since 1995 the total fertility rate has remained below the replacement level of 2.10.The mean age at which women bore their first child was 29.2 years, while the mean age of women at childbirth (for all births) stood at 30.8 in 2017.The number of deaths reached 5,996 in 2017 and the corresponding crude death rate was 7.0 deaths per 1,000 population.Infant mortality reached a very low level of 1.3 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2017.The total number of marriages in 2017 decreased to 13,062 from 13,558 the year before. Church marriages showed a slight increase from 2016 (3,942 to 3,926) and civil marriages dropped from 9,632 in 2016 to 9,120 in 2017.A large number of foreigners who married in Cyprus by civil marriage were not residing in Cyprus. Civil marriages of residents of Cyprus stood at 1,940 in 2017 from a total of 9,120. Thus the total number of marriages of residents totalled 5,882.Divorces in 2017 stood at 1,932, with the crude divorce rate estimated at 2.25 per 1,000 population.Net migration in Cyprus has been positive between 1983-2011.
