first_imgMichael Binns was easily Portmore United’s man of the match for his double strike and all-round classy performance in their 3-1 second-leg semi-final win, which gave them a 4-3 victory on aggregate and a place in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) final against Montego Bay United. Tramaine Stewart scored Portmore United’s third goal, while Kemeel Wolfe was responsible for Humble Lion’s sole strike at Arnett Gardens’ Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Monday night. Binns’ classiest performance of the night, though, came off the field and occurred when he dedicated the win to the deceased father of one of his opponents, Ricardo Cousins. “This victory means a lot to me, and I just want to dedicate it to my friend Ricardo Cousins’ dad, even though Ricardo was on the losing team tonight,” the midfielder said, as he soaked up all the adulation at the end of the game. He also went over to console Cousins and some of the other Humble Lion players. “Ricardo is a very good friend to me, and his dad was a member of Portmore United. He was a big fan of Portmore, so I want to dedicate this one to him,” added Binns, who was captained by Cousins to the schoolboy triple crown while playing for Glenmuir High in 2004; and who also played alongside him when Portmore United won the RSPL in 2008. Of the game itself, Binns said that things went better than they planned. “Our intention coming into the game was to keep our head and try to get an early goal and take control of the game, and we got two, so that was great,” added the 27-year-old, who confessed to being overwhelmed. While not being a prolific scorer, Binns, who returned to the club in October last year after a number of years living in Florida, said he was prepared for the opportunities to come. “I am the dead-ball kicker in the team, so I was not surprised when the opportunities came. I had been practising them all week, and whenever I get a chance, I am pretty confident that I am going to put them away. “I have scored six goals so far this season and these are my most important two,” continued the man who is dreaming of playing a part in taking Portmore United from promoted team to champions. While stating that he was looking forward to going back to the States to his wife and family, Binns said that will come after the finals. “It is great to be back. It is really wonderful, and while I have to go back to the wife and family, I am staying until after the final,” he said, with a broad smile.last_img read more

first_imgThe Government of Sweden has provided 15 Million Swedish Krona (SEK) (US$2M) in support of the UN Joint Appeal to respond to the Ebola crisis in Liberia. At a formal signing ceremony in Monrovia recently, the Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden in Liberia, Ms. Ewa Nunes Sorenson, said Sweden was happy and proud to support the people of Liberia through the United Nations.“Sweden is happy to contribute to efforts by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to improve Sexual and Reproductive Health and reduce morbidity and mortality among pregnant women and girls and combat gender-based violence during the Ebola crisis in Liberia”, Ms. Sorenson said.“Through this mechanism, we are also happy to support the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) to establish early case detection at community level around refugee camps as well as UN WOMEN’s contribution to social mobilization and strengthening of women’s network, as we know that a large part of the victims are women as they often care for the sick”, Ms. Sorensen added. In response UNFPA-Liberia Officer-in-Charge, Dr. Remi Sogunro, who signed on behalf of the UN said, “The global response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa has increased significantly in recent weeks, but there still remains a huge gap in stopping the spread of the virus, treat those who have been infected and ensure the provision of essential health services. The support from the Government and people of Sweden is the first tangible support to the Joint UN Appeal. It is our hope that this SEK 15 million can be a catalyst for a rapid restoration of health and social services to the communities in dire need.”Dr. Remi further noted that Ebola is not only having a heavy toll on women as care givers in hospitals or at home, but also as wives, individuals, mothers and givers of life. The ceremony was also witnessed by UNHCR Liberia Representative Khassim Diagne, who stated that the UNHCR Liberia office is grateful to the Swedish Government for “significant contribution towards our preparedness and response activities in the refugee camps against Ebola.”In September 2014, the UN Resident Coordinator, Antonio Vigilente, on behalf of the UN in Liberia launched an appeal for 500 million USD to support the Government response to the Ebola outbreak.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgSeveral months after the resignation of Mr. Robert Sirleaf as Chairman of the Board of Directors of National Oil Company (NOCAL), President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has finally appointed a successor to fill the void left by her son.The newly appointed NOCAL board Chair, Cllr. Seward Montgomery Cooper, is Legal Advisor to President Sirleaf. It is unclear whether he will be relieved of this position as he heads to NOCAL; or whether he will occupy both positions as his predecessor, also senior advisor to President Sirleaf, once did.The Chairman’s post at NOCAL is viewed by many as a sensitive but, lucrative, one, due to its cardinal importance to the country’s economy as a major generator of revenue.Cllr. Cooper’s ascendency to the head of what is being viewed as the nation’s most financially lucrative asset now depends on his success with the Liberian Senate. He will face thorough questioning at the hands of the Senate in a confirmation hearing, which he is expected to attend shortly. The appointment of Cllr. Cooper as NOCAL’s board chair was announced by President Sirleaf’s office Tuesday, January 21. His appointment comes exactly four months and four days since Mr. Robert Sirleaf tendered in his letter of resignation.Mr. Robert Alvin Sirleaf resigned his post as NOCAL boss as well as Senior Advisor to the Liberian Chief Executive on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. His appointment by his mother had earlier received a barrage of criticisms from Liberians both at home and abroad. They termed President Sirleaf’s action as nepotism and cronyism. In his letter of resignation addressed to President Johnson-Sirleaf, Mr. Sirleaf stated that his resignation “fulfills a promise made to the Liberian people” by the President, that his role at NOCAL would come to an end when “reforms were in place.”He commended the Liberian Senate for the passage of the New Petroleum Law and NOCAL Act which according to him were “important to safeguarding a potential national resource.” It may be recalled that the Plenary of the Liberian Senate on Tuesday, September 11, 2013 passed the New Petroleum Law and NOCAL Act during its Special Session.Speaking to the Daily Observer in an exclusive interview Tuesday, Cllr. Seward Montgomery Cooper said it was “an honor to be called upon by President Sirleaf to serve in such an important, yet challenging, capacity.”An acclaimed international and corporate lawyer, Cllr. Cooper also serves as a member of both the Inter-Ministerial Concessions Committee and the Hydrocarbon Technical Committee that negotiate concession contracts for Liberia. He indicated that though the task at hand is a huge one, collective efforts can make President Sirleaf’s dream regarding NOCAL assisting the country’s development a reality. He said that if properly managed within the correct framework, NOCAL would continue to be a vibrant revenue-generating corporation.Cllr. Cooper expressed the belief that Liberia is in a better position to learn from the experiences of other petroleum producing countries, especially those on the African continent, to make this newly discovered national asset a blessing for the Liberian people. He explained that even though there are still challenges with the New Petroleum Law and NOCAL Act, he prayed that after the public consultation exercises, now underway at the lower House, the matter becomes settled and the legal framework put into place.Counselor Cooper was the first head of the African Development Bank (AfDB Integrity and Anti-Corruption office. The AfDB is Africa’s premier development financial organization and globally is one of the seven leading international development financial institutions.Prior to that appointment, he served as the first Chief Counsel and Unit Head for Good Governance at the African Development Bank, where he also served as founding editor-in-chief of the Bank’s Law for Development Review and as the first editor of the Bank’s Law for Development Bulletin. As a principal counsel of the AfDB he negotiated complex legal transactions for the Bank’s private sector department.  Before joining the African Development Bank, Cooper led the international practice group of one of America’s largest multi-cultural law firms based in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. He also lectured as an adjunct professor of business law at the University of Liberia.Cllr. Cooper is a former president of the Liberia Chamber of Commerce and former Deputy Agriculture Minister of Liberia. He co-led the conception of, and drafted the basic document for, the establishment of the African Legal Support Facility, a new multi-million dollar international organization of Member States, headquartered in Tunisia, that provides technical legal assistance to African countries. He is married to the Reverend Dr. Anne Fredericks Cooper, and is the father of three adult children.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
