first_imgWicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, who spiced up India’s lower-order batting on Saturday with a dogged unbeaten 54 which helped the side go past the 300-run mark in the first innings, said the plan was to play aggressively from the start of the day. (Day 2 Report | Highlights)”The plan was to focus on short partnerships. We thought 270-280 will be a good score initially then try for 300. Thankfully that happened with Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) and (Mohammed) Shami,” Saha told reporters at the press conference following the end of the day’s play at the Eden Gardens here. The diminutive batsman hit his first half-century at home and stitched together crucial partnerships with Jadeja for the eighth wicket (41) and later with Shami (35) for the last wicket. India posted 316 in the first innings riding on their lower-order performance. (Bhuvneshwar repays Kohli’s faith with another five-wicket haul)Asked if it is a particular plan as in both Tests the lower-order has contributed significantly, Saha said, “No always the plan is batsmen will make runs like they do. Then if tailenders can contribute it is an added boost and is very helpful. We want to stretch this lower order run flow.”Saha in action (AP Photo)Saha said that keeping in mind the seaming wicket, dealing in boundaries was what the doctor prescribed.”It is a seaming wicket in the middle. We needed to play our shots otherwise we won’t get past 260. So our plan was to score off boundaries. If we would have gone for singles the score probably would have been around 280. That was the plan,” he remarked.advertisementThere was more movement after the rain interruption and vision was blurred, Saha informed.”After the rain we got more movement. Vision was blurred under lights. We got three wickets in the final session and hopefully we can continue the good streak.”‘GREAT BENCH STRENGTH’Saha also praised India’s bench strength.”We have great bench strength. As far as Bhuvi playing in this match is concerned, the team is formed according to who fits in for that match. Bhuvi was needed here so he played and he bowled outstandingly.”Saha wrapped up by saying that this innings was a ‘normal’ one for him and it was only vital as it helped the team get past 300.”This was like any other innings. This was normal. The team is more important and I am happy the team went past 300 and I could contribute,” he added.last_img read more

first_imgA coroner’s inquest into the death of Phillip Hughes opened on Monday, almost two years after the Australian cricketer died when he was struck by a ball during a match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.Hughes was hit on the back of the neck by a rising delivery when batting for South Australia in a domestic match on Nov. 25, 2014. He died two days later in a Sydney hospital.Over the next week, the New South Wales Coroner’s Court will review the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine whether the 25-year-old’s death could have been avoided. (Also read: Angelo Mathews accident revives memories of Phil Hughes tragedy)The court will consider evidence on “the nature of the play” during the match, the medical and emergency response to Hughes’s injury as well as on whether protective equipment might have prevented the blow being fatal.Evidence from Sean Abbott, the New South Wales cricketer who bowled the fateful delivery, as well as former and current Test players Brad Haddin, Doug Bollinger and David Warner will be heard.Cricket Australia has already implemented the recommendations made in a 62-page independent report the body commissioned from a senior lawyer, David Curtain, which was released in May.The Curtain Report recommended that players be forced to wear helmets when facing fast and medium-paced bowling even if it concluded that such protection would not have prevented the batsman’s death.Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland joined with the player’s former manager James Henderson in requesting that the privacy of Hughes’s family be respected during the hearing. (Also read: India vs Australia: Phil Hughes’ death unites old cricketing foes)advertisement”We never want to see a tragedy like this happen on the cricket field, and to that end we have the utmost respect for the coronial inquest process that we will need to go through this week,” Sutherland told reporters outside the court.”We won’t be providing a running commentary dealing with specific issues through the week, but we do hope something good comes from this process.”last_img read more

first_imgThe Australian Open tennis tournament on Friday decided to cut controversial court-side advertisements for betting agencies. The decision comes in the wake of the 2016 Australian Open being heavily criticised for prominently displaying advertising for its betting partner just days after tennis was hit by its biggest ever match-fixing controversy, reports Xinhua.Tennis Australia (TA) President Steve Healy said the decision to cut the advertisements was made in response to public backlash in 2016 as well as the match-fixing scandal. (Latest Tennis stories)Healy said the advertising agency the tournament uses was on board with the decision despite a possible loss of sponsorship revenue.”We need to put it in perspective. The arrangements that were struck with (betting company) William Hill before this issue had such a high profile and so we’ve worked with our partners to address that,” Healy said.Healy said for the first time at the 2017 Australian Open, TA would employ two investigative officers to be on site and monitor suspicious betting activity.”There’ll be no matches specifically targeted,” Healy told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Friday.”It’ll just be random matches and from that then we’ll just be looking at the data.”He said TA was mostly unconcerned about the prospect of match-fixing at the Australian Open and that most occurrences of the practice came at smaller tournaments.”Our role is to make sure that all of our Australian players are educated, they understand the risks, the deceptions that take place that might leave them into something unseemly,” Healy said.advertisement”We made the decision to not just sit back and wait for the review (into this year’s scandals) but to take immediate action.”Healy said even the prize pool for the Australian Open, the largest ever for a Grand Slam tournament, might not be enough to staff off the temptation of match-fixing.”I think it’s not just a question of money,” he said.”People generally will do bad things, because they’re bad people. That’s the reality. So money is not the only solution.”last_img read more

Gabriel Jesus joining from Palmeiras provided Aguero with serious competition, and the Catalan will continue to have no qualms about taking the Argentine out of his line-up when he believes it is required.Asked if he ever worried Aguero would leave City, Guardiola told a news conference: “Never. You all asked me many times, especially in the first year when we didn’t win, and sometimes he didn’t play, ‘What’s the problem with Sergio?'”I understand when you take that decision – it happened in Barcelona many times – I always know the reaction [will be bad] when the result is not good, but I have to take decisions.”But the relationship [with Aguero] was always top, was perfect, and I’m delighted he can continue playing here.”Always when he didn’t play few, few, few times it’s because I believed Gabriel could play, or play with a false nine or whatever. That is going to happen the next three years.”Now he knows me better, I know him better, like a football player, like a human being, and that is the most important thing.”A very happy @aguerosergiokun on contract signing day! #mancity— Manchester City (@ManCity) September 21, 2018After a disappointing World Cup with Brazil, Jesus has just one City goal to his name this season and was replaced by Aguero after 63 minutes in their surprise 2-1 Champions League defeat to Lyon on Wednesday.Guardiola pointed out the 21-year-old still has a lot to learn and feels he and the team as a whole can emulate the best athletes and teams in sport by responding to their recent adversities positively.”His first high pressing is the best in the world but he’s still a young player and they have gaps to improve,” said Guardiola.”We are going to help in the final third, in taking decisions, in the short spaces, but the most important thing from Gabriel is the desire to improve and always he’s paying attention in training sessions to know what he can improve and he will get it.”I was not there [the World Cup] so I can’t speak about that, but they are young and that is a challenge.”In a good moment you have to be stable, in the bad moments you have to be ‘OK, I am here again.’ You have to learn [from] the best athletes in the world, always they have a new challenge … you have to face it. You have to learn from that and improve.”When we analyse how good we are it’s always the past, it’s never what [just] happened. The game is over and the day after you never know what’s going to happen.”The most nice thing and the reason I like to be here again and again is now it’s a new challenge.
